Adam Parker – Case Study

JMP Consultants Limited

Adam-Parker-fullWhilst at school, I really enjoyed sport and had considered pursuing a career in this field, possibly as a P.E. teacher. However when I completed my work experience within an Engineering environment, I knew this would be something I would enjoy. I was able to complete my school work experience at DH Budenberg Ltd and work alongside the Senior Design Technician. I was introduced to CAD and technical drawings, as well as using 3D design software. I completed a BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Engineering at Wellacre Academy and achieved a Merit grade.

When I left school, I applied online for a vacancy that was being advertised on stegta’s website. Stegta then invited me in to their premises to attend a recruitment session, I had an interview with the recruitment team and they then put my details forward to JMP Consultants Limited in Manchester. I was invited back to the company for a second interview and prepared portfolios which detailed the work and evidence that I had collected from my BTEC and work experience.

A week later I was offered the position of Apprentice CAD Technician and commenced employment at JMP Consultants Ltd on 28th August 2012. As part of the Apprenticeship programme I also attended the induction day at stegta which gave me chance to find out more about the Apprenticeship Framework and what it involves, as well as information about health and safety, team building and a range of group activities.

I’m now undertaking an Extended Diploma in Built Environment Design Level 3 and I attend a day release at Bolton College to achieve the Technical Certificate, Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment. My Training Officer, Rick Jones and College Tutor Roger Kendall have been really supportive and I’m really enjoying the training so far.

During my time at JMP Consultants Limited, with the help of the team, I feel I have developed my knowledge in all areas of the business but particularly with using CAD and assisting in the design and planning of road layouts. I’ve also had the opportunity to join the JMP 5-a-side football team which has been a great way for me to integrate with the team.

I was really surprised to discover that during 2007, whilst I was still studying at Wellacre, JMP Consultants were commissioned to design the layout for the Wellacre Academy Sixth Form car park. What a coincidence!

Robert Tams, Associate at JMP added, ‘Although we have recruited Apprentices at our other offices nationwide, this is the first time that the Manchester Office has employed an Apprentice. It has been a great opportunity to bring someone new into the company who can take a fresh look at the business and bring ideas to the table. Adam is keen to learn and is doing really well.’
