STEGTA Excellence Award 19 – WASEEM HUSSAIN

We would like to Congratulate Waseem who is employed by AECOM in Birmingham, as he has been awarded a STEGTA Excellence Award for Outstanding Performance in Railway Engineering Design.
We asked Waseem how he felt about winning the award.
“I have always had an interest into engineering as without an engineer everything we see today wouldn’t exist.

Going from a student and entering into professional industry takes time to adjust to but at every point my employer always provided me with support through assigning me a mentor and having regular catch ups with my line manager. My STEGTA Training Officer Helen Wilson thoroughly explained to me the requirements of my Apprenticeship such as the NVQ Level 3 that I had to complete and my end point assessment with the IET. Helen went the extra mile to help me complete my NVQ and Apprenticeship in record time and without Helen I couldn’t have achieved what I have so far.

One of the projects that were my greatest achievement was the design of a new station in which I was responsible for the drawing content and coordination of the design. I was given the responsibility of formulating systems designs and was left to my own devices with feedback from senior engineers. This was a proud moment as I had inputted into a design based on the knowledge I had picked up.

Currently I am undertaking a HNC in electrical engineering and my aim is to complete a degree in electrical engineering at AECOM. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Helen, my employer and the STEGTA staff for putting me forward for the interview that was the start of it all”.

Waseem’s Training Officer – Helen Wilson commented:

“Waseem has worked tirelessly to complete his apprenticeship in record time. He is helping newer apprentices by becoming their mentor and able to pass on his skills and knowledge gained in the last 18 months. He has presented to schools always puts work before anything else. His communication is faultless and he is always on hand to go over above with helping other apprentices at AECOM.

Waseem’s Line Manager, Kevin Goode of AECOM also commented: Waseem’s progress has been outstanding. It’s a credit to his attitude and professionalism that he has completed his Apprenticeship in record time. In the office, he approaches the tasks given to him with enthusiasm and shows his respect and appreciation for the mentorship he receives. Waseem’s career is at an early stage, however we at AECOM are already convinced that he will develop into an outstanding all-round engineer with a bright future to look forward to”.
